From our commitment to environmental and social governance (ESG) to our community impact partnerships, making a positive impact is core to who we are as a company. We have a long history of using our time and expertise for positive impact — with our very early days spent mapping clinics in Nigeria, floods in Pakistan, deforestation in Congo, and elections in Afghanistan.
Throughout April, we celebrated Global Volunteer Month, which celebrates the spirit and impact of volunteerism. We encouraged Mapboxers to utilize their Volunteer Time Off (VTO), an employee benefit offering Mapboxers four days of paid time off to volunteer, to give back and invest in the communities they live and work in. Here are some of the ways Mapboxers gave back in April.
Mapboxers in Seattle Volunteering with Food Lifeline
Billy, Michael, and Zach were part of a group of volunteers at Food Lifeline who helped sort and repack 10,800 lbs of food into distributable boxes. From there, the food will be sent to local food banks in Washington to help feed local communities struggling with hunger.
Helping Clothe Those in Need in Helsinki
Our Helsinki, Finland team partnered with Hope Ry, an organization that intakes donated clothing and provides it to families in need. Mapboxers sorted and organized incoming donations that will eventually go to local families.
Park Clean Up in Tokyo
Mapboxers in Tokyo, Japan spent the day beautifying Hibiya Park, sweeping leaves and pulling weeds.
Park Clean Up in Minsk
Mapboxers in Minsk, Belarus, spent time helping clean up and beautify Kurasoŭšcyna Park, raking leaves and re-painting planters.
Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team: Helping Map Vulnerable Places and Communities
Mapboxers in the U.S. and Europe partnered with Humanitarian OpenStreetMap (HOT) to map vulnerable areas of Papua New Guinea, which was hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in March. These community-driven maps support humanitarian aid and sustainable development in places that are vulnerable to disaster and poverty.
Commitment to Positive Impact
While Global Volunteer Month is a fun way for communities and companies to come together and give back to local communities, Mapbox is committed to making a positive impact every day of the year.
"Companies and their consumers across all industries use Mapbox to navigate, move, and make decisions. Our social and environmental responsibility extends beyond our immediate operational footprint. We are committed to leveraging the unique potential of our products, and the customers who build with them, to drive outsized positive impact for society." -Peter Sirota, CEO at Mapbox
Beyond empowering our employees to volunteer locally, our technology is being used to help address some of the world’s most pressing concerns like conservation and climate change. We also partner with numerous nonprofits and NGOs who are changing the world like World Central Kitchen, UNHCR - the UN Refugee Agency, and Eyesea. Through these partnerships, Mapbox continues to empower and enable positive impact at scale.
