The 16th "Mapbox/OpenStreetMap Online meetup" hosted by the Furuhashi Laboratory at Aoyama Gakuin University will be held online on Friday, July 19, 2024 from 7pm to 9pm JST, with operational support provided by Mapbox Japan G.K. (Mapbox), a leading company in the development of digital maps. Participation is free, but advance registration is required.

The theme of the 16th meetup: "Whoever controls the map, controls the election!"

The year 2024 is a major turning point in elections that will decide the future of countries and regions, such as the Tokyo gubernatorial election and the US presidential election, which are the foundation of democracy. In addition, Mapbox was commissioned by the U.S. Department of State to plot on a map the areas in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, where irregularities in the presidential election were suspected. The theme of the meetup will be "elections", which could be said to be the origin of Mapbox as a keyword, we will have a variety of people who are active in the creation of polygonal data and statistical data for the House of Representatives' single-member constituencies, the analysis of open data related to elections, investigative journalism using maps, the provision of map apps as election campaign tools, etc., take the stage, and we will have an online meetup to consider the future of elections and the use of web maps.

Event Overview

The "Mapbox/OpenStreetMap Online meetup" is an event for interaction between Mapbox and the OpenStreetMap user community. With the aim of developing the map industry, this meetup has been held since October 2019 by Mapbox and the Furuhashi Laboratory at Aoyama Gakuin University as a place for people from various positions to talk about the future of web maps in a flat manner.

第16回テーマ：『地図を制するものは選挙も制する！？』

2024年は東京都知事選挙や米国大統領選挙など、民主主義の根幹となる選挙によって、これからの国や地域の未来を決めてく大きな節目となる選挙イヤーです。また、アメリカに本社を置くMapbox社は、誕生した2009年の最初の仕事として、米国・国務省の依頼でアフガニスタンの首都カブールを舞台に、大統領選の不正が疑われる地域を地図にプロットしていたという経緯もあります。Mapboxの原点とも言える「選挙」をキーワードとして、衆議院小選挙区のポリゴンデータおよび統計データの作成、選挙にかかわるオープンデータの分析や地図を活用した調査報道、選挙活動ツールとしての地図アプリ提供等、様々に活動されている方々にご登壇いただき、選挙とウェブ地図の利活用の未来を考えていくオンライン meetup になります。
